Puerto Varas, Lake District, Chile
July 24, 2013 – We had a very busy day today. At breakfast in the palafito we had more espresso and lattes 🙂 We also met a lovely German couple. They were slightly older than us and they were just starting their travels through Chile and were going all the way north to the Atacama Desert. We were jealous because we have to get on a plane and come home tomorrow!
We left our hotel on a mission to buy some last minute souveniers and we (I) ended up buying a boatload of stuff at the open air market in Castro…. so much so that we had to go buy more luggage (carry on bags) so we would not be overweight. haha.
We left Castro and decided to take a closer look at the areas around Castro that we loved and see if there were more wooden churches. We also checked out the Iglesia de San Francisco Cathedral in Castro, which was beautiful inside and out. We ended up taking another short 10 minute ferry across the Dalcahue Channel to the island of Quinchao. While we were there we were able to see more churches and chapels (capillas) in the small cities of Achao, Quinchao and Matao more along with more countryside and beautiful views.
Before we left Chiloe we had to swing through Ancud so we could stop at Faros del Sur and pick up Wayne’s computer bag from Minerva…I don’t think I will ever live that one down and Wayne will probably never again rely on me to grab HIS stuff. I gave Minerva a nice little tip and Thanked her profusely….So now you know why our blog is behind….
We made it to the ferry to go back to the mainland of Chile and were starving. At the beginning of our trip, we noticed a particular billboard ad that showed a woman getting ready to bite a hot dog in a very suggestive way. We saw this sign everywhere! And then we noticed that hot dogs were sold everywhere and in restaurants too….they call them completos and they are smothered with smashed avocado (palto), chopped tomato and mayonnaise…Ewww you are probably thinking…I did too when I first saw it. As our trip went on though the completos actually started to look tasty…So yes on our last night we ate a completo…from the galley on the ferry…yum. I can’t believe some of the places we bought food from…
We arrived after dark to Puerto Varas at the Solace Hotel…another larger hotel with an elevator. Thank God because we had a carload to bring up to the room to figure out how to pack. The bellhop and registration clerk were laughing at our over loaded luggage cart on wheels. Luckily everything fit and we had a scale in our room. We were exactly at 50# for our suitcases and 17# for our carry on bags… which was the limit. Unfortunately we couldn’t pack one of the bottles of wine that we bought because that would put us over weight, so we had to drink it…darn…such a great bottle.
