Naples, Campania, Italy
May 09, 2014 – We arrived at about 3 pm to Naples and all three of us were so tired from 18 hours of travel. My baggage was the very last to arrive off of the carousel….in fact, the carousel completely stopped and we had to wait a few more minutes before it started again. I was stressed for a bit. We originally planned to take a taxi or city bus to the Naples train station to get to our bed and breakfast in Salerno but we were approached by a taxi driver who offered to take us all the way to Salerno for 100 euro… We decided to go for it.
Our taxi driver got lost in Salerno and his GPS was not taking us to the right location so we really got to experience the crazy driving of Italians. He was driving down extremely narrow alley ways just barely missing pedestrians and turning in front of oncoming cars. It was quite hilarious….a wild ride indeed!
We finally made it to our bed and breakfast which is called Barone Bed and Breakfast. The palace was built in the 1920’s and was originally going to be a hotel, but the Barone family decided to keep it as their family’s primary residence. The elevator to our 5th floor room is basically an old rickety cage. Out host Vincenzo is very hospitable and gave us a map and suggestions about what to do, see and eat in Salerno.
We decided to get cleaned up before we went out to explore. I was attempting to put my backpack inside the armoire and I accidentally bumped the large wooden door and it came off the hinge and landed on my eye. Ouch….so now I get to walk around Italy with a shiner. Pretty. It’s not too bad yet…it looks like my eye shadow and mascara smeared a little.
We ventured out into Salerno and walked along the waterfront and into the old part of town. We had a yummy snack…a scoop of gelato inside Brioche…an Italian ice cream sandwich….sooooo good. For dinner we had pizza at Vincenzo’s friends restaurant. It was perhaps the best pizza I have ever had. We shared a bottle of wine with dinner and we were all so tired. You would have thought that we shared 3 bottles of wine…we laughed all the way back to our bed and breakfast and we topped off our day laughing hysterically as Caitlin and Wayne tried to figure our how to properly use a bidet…Wayne mentioned that it felt like a “wet willy” to his butt……what a great day!

I am so happy to follow your adventures. Shar, sorry about the shiner!
I love seeing the beautiful architecture and hearing about the cuisine.
I can’t wait to read your next post.
Ciao!

Haha … reading about your taxi ride reminded me of the ride Gar and I had from one of their infamous drivers … ours only knew 2 speeds, stop and pedal to the medal. The pedal to the medal on the narrow streets was a rush … our guy like rolling his window down to give slow drivers the fist while mummbling something in Italian that I would guess translated to “shit or get off the pot”. Haha …
