June 17 & 18, 2019 – The Monday night redeye was uneventful other than marginal sleep on the plane. We hit the ground in Toronto about 7 am and grabbed a train into the city center. It’s really a beautiful city. We first went up to the top of the iconic CN Tower which was once the tallest building in the world. The SkyTerrace is 342 meters (1,122 feet) above the city, and the very peak, the SkyPod, at 447 meters (1,465 feet) above the city. It was a relatively clear morning and we could see the whole city, as well as, buildings in Rochester New York 95 miles across Lake Ontario from the SkyPod.
Then we went on to the Old Town district of Toronto to see the historic St. Lawrence Market and the Old Distillery District. The market hosts 120 vendors selling a wide variety of food, souvenirs, flowers, and specialty items. Would be an awesome place to shop for groceries if you live there. We split a huge eggplant parmigiana sandwich for lunch in the basement. Then it was on to the Old Distillery district which is one of Toronto’s most picturesque neighborhoods. With cobblestone lanes and Victorian-style shops and buildings, the site was founded as the city’s first distillery in the 1830’s. Redeveloped in the early 2000’s, the district now features high-end boutique shops, art galleries and studios, and restaurants. We enjoyed our first gelato there. As a gelato connoisseur, this will be a common theme of our travels. Ask Caitlin!!! She knows… 😊
On our way back to the airport, we stopped at an interesting pub called The Jersey Giant for a rest in some nice leather chairs and cold beer. It appears to be an old pub taken down and reassembled inside a modern building. See pics.
A trip to Toronto wouldn’t be complete without a quick trip through the Hockey Hall of Fame. Really amazing building and memorabilia. Got a pic with the Stanley Cup and saw lots of hockey history. I have attached some pics but can send a lot more for any hockey fans.
Lastly, we were running out of time so quickly went through Art Gallery of Ontario. Interesting exhibits especially the ship models and a couple western art painters depicting true life in the Old West. Wanted to grab a few for the Montana place.
Then back to the airport for Tuesday nights red eye to Barcelona.
You do an amazing job with your posts, enjoy, Hugs
